Launch of Bawso Forced Marriage Research Report

Bawso launched its report on forced marriage and honour-based violence on the 19th of October 2023. The event was well attended at the university of South Wales, Cardiff campus. The report was launched by Jane Hutt, minister for Social Justice and chief whip, Welsh Government.

There were insightful presentations from Johanna Robinson, VAWDASV national advisor on , Welsh Government, Dr

Joanne Hopkins from Public Health Wales/ACES and Dr Sarah Wallce, lecturer, University of South Wales and co-chair, VAWDASV research network Wales.

Below, find a statement from the minister and Bawso CEO and a link to the summary report.

“I welcome this report on forced marriage in Wales. It aligns with the ambitions of Welsh Government’s Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Wales strategy. I particularly applaud the evidence and case studies given by survivors and frontline specialist staff in the report, which helps us to better understand this insidious and horrendous form of abuse.

These issues add to the unnecessary barriers to seeking safety in Wales which are utterly at odds with our vision to be a Nation of Sanctuary. So, here in Wales, we are seeking to do what we can to support these survivors.

I was also struck by the clear messages in the report about the need to work with perpetrators, both to hold them responsible for their actions and ensure that convictions reflect the crime committed, but also to support individuals to change their behaviour and prevent abuse escalating.

These recommendations reflect our wider ambition to increase the focus on prevention and perpetration while continuing to fully support victims and survivors.”

– Jane Hutt, minister for Social Justice and chief whip, Welsh Government

“Forced marriage is an egregious violation of women’s rights and human rights that has persisted for generations. It perpetuates gender inequality, undermines personal autonomy, and drives cycles of poverty and violence. At Bawso our goal is to challenge cultural norms, strengthen legislation and provide support to eradicate this abhorrent practice.”

“Forced marriage chains dreams, stifles voices and shatters lives. Let’s break these chains of coercion and protect the right to choose.”

– Tina Fahm, Bawso Chief Executive
