Bawso Reclaim Project

Victims of domestic abuse often suffer immensely from mental health challenges, which are further compounded by their backgrounds, cultures, and belief systems. In many communities, particularly among BME groups, mental health issues are heavily stigmatized, making it even more difficult for victims to seek and receive the support they need.

Within the UK, and especially in Wales, there are numerous barriers preventing service users particularly those with No Recourse to Public Funds from accessing appropriate mental health support. Many of our BME service users are unable to afford private counselling, and with the closure of several mental health charities in Wales, the situation has become even more critical. Currently, waiting times for counselling services range from one year to a year and a half, during which many of our service users experience further deterioration in their mental health.

At Bawso, we are committed to finding innovative ways to support our service users while they await professional help. One such initiative is the Reclaim Therapeutic Sessions a holistic, art-based project introduced by a colleague. This project allows clients to use creative expression as a means of processing feelings, calming the mind, and managing their mental health.

Through art, clients are given a non-verbal outlet to explore and express their emotions, promoting healing and resilience. Moreover there is potential for their artwork to be exhibited or sold, with proceeds supporting the NRPF project offering both therapeutic and practical benefits.

We believe the Reclaim project has the potential to positively impact a wide range of our service users, helping them to reclaim their voices, manage their mental wellbeing, and move forward with dignity and hope.

This year, at the Cardiff Half Marathon 2025, our runners are fundraising for this project. See how they’re doing and support them by donating or sharing!
