In particular, women from the BME community. Bawso’s values strive to ensure that “All people in Wales were free from Abuse, Violence and Exploitation” and this can be seen through the work that Bawso does. As part of raising awareness of issues our service users face such as FGM, Honour Based Violence, Forced Marriage and Domestic Violence, we encourage and work with the service users to tell their stories to the audience who attend our events.

FGM 2022

This year, the 6th of February was the United Nations International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. The UN quotes “Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights, the health and the integrity of girls and women”. FGM is a global issue that needs to be eradicated in practicing communities.

Bawso hosted an event on 24th February 2022 via a digital platform. The event was well attended and featured guests including Stephanie Blakemore (Gwent Police) who talked about the work the police do in the Gwent area. This involves communities and partners addressing honour based violence which covers FGM; Magdalene Kimani (Culturally Harmful Behaviours Support Worker at Swansea Council) shared with us a whole family approach to addressing FGM within practicing communities; Olabimpe (Bawso IDVA Worker) gave a synopsis on our work supporting victims and survivors of FGM; and a key note speech from Yasmin Khan (National Advisor for VAWDASV, from the Welsh Government). Her keynote speech highlighted what the Welsh Government is doing to help stop FGM in the community and the plans the Government has for the future. We heard stories from survivors and had some poetry, which one called men to action in the fight to end FGM in the community. The theme for the event was “Say No To The Cut”.
