Gender based violence (GBV)

Kenya – Africa

Under the Wales for Africa program, we are working with Christian Partners development Agency (CPDA) in Kenya to build the capacity of girls who have dropped out of school due to pregnancies. This project enables girls to learn new skills they can use to raise awareness in their own communities on gender-based violence. This includes performance arts and using social media.

Our partners are creating awareness in 10 schools and training young advocates including boys to stand up against gender-based violence. They have reached over 500 girls with education on gender-based violence and graduated 100 young women who have dropped out of school due to early pregnancies.

Other local partners include the Uzalendo Justice centre who have been trained by CPDA to identify victims of violence. The centre has the legal mandate to investigate cases of gender-based violence and collect adequate evidence that can aid the prosecution in presenting cases to courts. The centre has a a lawyer who provides probono services to victims of violence. During the second phase of implementing the Wales for Africa project, CPDA with the support of the girls on the project and the community, were able to identify 6 cases. Three cases were investigated by the justice centre and matters resolved while 3 are still pending awaiting comprehensive evidence. Out of the cases that were resolved, an uncle who had raped a young girl was arrested by the police and presented in court.

CPDA has also trained 10 volunteer community health workers to identify girls at risk of violence, victims of violence and refer them to appropriate services including to CPDA offices.

Within the 8 months the project has been running, CPDA has received 6 cases of violence that includes rape, pregnancy by incest and violence on minors. All cases have been picked by the Justice centre and 3 of the girls have accessed justice while 3 cases are still ongoing investigations
